Victor Allen Simon, Photographer
Methods

Victor Allen Simon uses a wide variety of camera formats and printing processes: from toy cameras to $30,000 digital backs; from archival inkjet prints to traditional silver-gelatins.

Victor performs all of his own printing. The color images are rendered in pigment-based ink, and top-coated for added protection. These images have a display life of 65+ years. The beauty and stability of these prints well exceed anything produced in Victor's seven years of color darkroom printing.

Most of the black-and-white work is created in the darkroom. Prints incorporate hand-bleaching, flashing or deliberate fogging, split-toning, and other alchemy. Experiments in black-and-white inkjet printing are ongoing.

Regarding the use of traditional versus digital methods, Victor states: "I see more similarities than differences. I'm glad there's a Michael Kenna; at the same time, I'm glad there's a Maggie Taylor. I try not to concern myself too much with photographic doctrine, but just strive to do good work."
